In reply to <a href="https://irreverentoutcrop.com/dunhuang-mogao-caves/#comment-996">Annie</a>.

Glad you like it! I'd say you can expect around 5 hours in total, with 2-3 hours actually spent inside the caves.

The end-to-end workflow is roughly like this:

1)arrive at the entrance building -> 2)check tickets-> 3)watch a required movie -> 4)take a 15-20min shuttle from that movie building to the actual caves (free but required) -> 5)check tickets again -> 6)get randomly assigned to a tour guide -> 7) visit 7 caves within ticketed area -> 8) disband and say good bye to the tour guide before leaving the ticketed area->9) leave the ticketed area on your own to see cave 96 without the tour guide ->10) visit the museum before getting on the return shuttle ->11) take the shuttle back.

Steps 1–6 (before seeing the actual caves) take about 1 hour, and the museum visit in step 10 takes another hour. After saying goodbye at step 8, the tour guide leaves immediately to meet the next group, so you’re free to do whatever you like.

Many people would rush to exit to see cave 96 because they might already feel tired at that point and want to go back home ASAP, but at that point you could totally just turn around and walk back to whatever caves that are open, meaning those with tour guides present, since only they have keys to open each cave’s gate. Popular caves almost always have tours coming and going, so their gates are usually open. For smaller, less-visited caves, you might need to wait for a bit for another group to arrive.

So impressed by your detailed and well researched description; many thanks!
My ticket entry is for 1130 (late Oct) - how much time should I allow for my visit?
How did you manage to stay longer in the ticketed area to see the caves for longer - would the guide allow that? I would like to spend longer in the cave area too as guided visits are normally quite rushed.
